Creating an AutoRun Menu for a USB Flash Drive

With SamLogic CD-Menu Creator 2010 it is possible to create an autorun menu for a USB flash drive (USB stick). These menus are not launched in the same way as in a CD or DVD, but the difference is small. With a CD/DVD the menu is often shown automatically when the disc is inserted into the drive but with a USB drive the user must press OK or Enter (after the USB flash drive has been plugged to a USB port) before the menu is launched.

When a USB flash drive is inserted in a USB port, a dialog box called Windows AutoPlay dialog box is shown. This dialog box contains a list of commands/actions that can be done with the drive. With CD-Menu Creator 2010 it is possible to create an item that will be inserted in the action list in the AutoPlay dialog box and it is also possible to have this item selected by default. You can specify your own text for the item and when a user chooses this item (for example by pressing Enter) your menu is opened.

It is also possible to specify a title for the AutoPlay dialog box. Below is an example of an AutoPlay dialog box in Windows XP that has an item ("Open My Menu") inserted in the action list and a new title ("My Menu") added to the dialog box:

The item text and dialog title above is specified in the updated Create dialog box in CD-Menu Creator 2010:

The Create dialog box has been extended with two new input fields, Label and Action text for Windows AutoPlay dialog box, that is used to add information to the AutoPlay dialog box in Windows. The Label field is also used to specify a description for the drive in Windows Explorer.

Restrictions in Windows 7
The above will work in Windows XP and Windows Vista, but in Windows 7 the possibility to add an item to the AutoPlay dialog box has been removed by Microsoft. The title of the AutoPlay dialog box can still be changed as before, and you can also change the icon that is shown in the AutoPlay dialog box, but it is not possible to add an item to the action list anymore. You can read about the reason to this change in the following technical article on our Internet site:
